What Is an NFA Item?

The National Firearms Act (NFA) of 1934 regulates certain classes of firearms and devices that require federal registration, an NFA tax stamp, and ATF approval before transfer to a civilian. The tax stamp fee is currently $0. Common NFA items we handle include:

  • Suppressors (also called silencers) — reduce muzzle report and concussive blast
  • Short-barreled rifles (SBR) — rifles with barrels under 16" or overall length under 26"
  • Short-barreled shotguns (SBS) — shotguns with barrels under 18" or overall length under 26"
  • Machine guns — fully automatic firearms (transferable pre-1986 only)
  • Any Other Weapon (AOW) — concealable smooth-bore firearms, pen guns, etc.
  • Destructive devices — grenade launchers, large-bore firearms, etc.

How to Buy an NFA Item Through Us

1

Browse and select your NFA item

Visit us in store or browse online. We stock suppressors and facilitate transfers for SBRs, SBSs, and other NFA items. As a SilencerShop Powered Dealer, we have access to their full suppressor inventory and can special-order virtually any model.

2

Complete your fingerprints & photos at a local kiosk

SilencerShop kiosks are available locally. You complete your Form 4 paperwork, fingerprints, and passport photo digitally — no ink cards, no mailing anything. Takes about 15 minutes.

3

Choose individual or NFA trust

You can register the suppressor in your individual name or as part of an NFA gun trust (recommended if multiple people will use it). We can walk you through the pros and cons.

4

ATF processes your Form 4

With e-Form submission through SilencerShop, current average wait times are 7–14 days — compared to 1–3 months with paper Form 4s or trust submissions.

5

Approval and pickup

Once the ATF approves your Form 4, we contact you immediately. Come in, show your approval, and take home your suppressor.

Missouri residents: Missouri has no NFA-specific restrictions beyond federal law. You must be 21+ to purchase, pass a NICS background check, and receive ATF approval before taking possession. The NFA tax stamp is currently $0.

NFA Trusts

An NFA gun trust allows multiple people (co-trustees) to legally possess and use your NFA items. Key benefits:

  • Spouse, family members, or trusted individuals can all legally possess the item
  • No CLEO sign-off required (though notification is still required for individuals)
  • Simplifies estate planning — NFA items pass to successor trustees
  • Each co-trustee must still pass a background check

We work with SilencerShop's gun trust service to make this easy and affordable. Ask us in store for details.
